{"id":1644,"date":"2012-07-30T14:49:24","date_gmt":"2012-07-30T14:49:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/php7.innershed.com:10000\/virtual-server\/link.cgi\/212.71.245.84\/http:\/\/www.connectafrica\/?p=1644"},"modified":"2012-11-03T12:30:56","modified_gmt":"2012-11-03T12:30:56","slug":"traditional-healers-and-cellular-phones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/?p=1644","title":{"rendered":"Traditional Healers and Cellular Phones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We drove for a while on a \u201croad\u201d, thankful that our vehicles could handle the bad condition of the dirt, and with a\u00a0more sympathetic awareness of why the elders of Moono Chiefdom, in our <a title=\"The start of our day at Moono\" href=\"http:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/?p=1638\" target=\"_blank\">earlier discussion at the Palace<\/a>, had said that a priority for them was to improve the conditions of the roads in their Chiefdom.<\/p>\n<p>Our first stop in our jam packed programme for the day was to their traditional healer, or sangoma.\u00a0 Dr Longwani, a tall, smiling\u00a0man with a hearty laugh, booming voice and a large presence, captured all our hearts even though he couldn\u2019t speak English.<\/p>\n<p>His office is a raised mud hut, enclosed from the other huts in the clearing by a wire fence, and with many plastic bags, charms and feathers hanging from the thatch roof.\u00a0 While we sat and recorded his interview in his vernacular, I noticed the many car parts lying around, and the old land rover up on bricks in the courtyard: Dr Longwani was also a car enthusiast.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ODeVMGzzPKo\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After his interview we got to see the inside of this office, with a shrine where much of his work was done over, together with administering herbs from the pile of roots and tree bark and branches, which were stored outside under a shelter.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sangoma-shrine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1647\" title=\"Dr Longwani's working shrine\" src=\"http:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sangoma-shrine-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sangoma-shrine-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sangoma-shrine-1024x612.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sangoma-shrine-500x300.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sangoma-shrine.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He did offer to make some love charms for the single ladies in the expedition team to help them find husbands.\u00a0 The offer was graciously declined by the independent and \u201cmodern\u201d women for varied reasons, while the men wore amused smiles.\u00a0 It was an interesting juncture of two different cultures crossing and wishes of cultural beliefs being projected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00157-Optimized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1651\" title=\"Telana, Healer Rosemary and Prince Lloyd\" src=\"http:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00157-Optimized-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00157-Optimized-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00157-Optimized-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00157-Optimized-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00157-Optimized.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The previous day we had spoken to Rosemary Mwita, another traditional healer at the <a title=\"Arrive at Kabulwebulwe Chiefdom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/?p=1592\" target=\"_blank\">Chiefdom of Kabulwebulwe<\/a>.\u00a0 She uses herbs and the roots of four different types of trees to help her patients. The majority of the complaints they come to her for are infertility, to be cleansed of evil spirits, and for lucky charms for love and employment.\u00a0 She also refers people to the local clinic for conditions like TB and HIV AIDS.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits she explained of how technology was helping her serve her patients, was that it has alleviated her previous challenge of not knowing if she had helped them or not.\u00a0 From a quick sms she could find out and then assist them further\u00a0if their problem persisted.\u00a0 It also allowed her to have clients living outside the Chiefdom and from other towns and cities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMAG1096-Optimized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1648\" title=\"Dr Longwani speaking to a patient\" src=\"http:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMAG1096-Optimized-179x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMAG1096-Optimized-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.connectafrica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMAG1096-Optimized.jpg 539w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a>And we saw these sentiments in action when, in Dr Longwani\u2019s remote little oasis in the bush, he received a phonecall from a client in a distant province, who\u00a0was calling to make an appointment to come and see him.<\/p>\n<p>This is an example of the value that cellular coverage has for rural people and their livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>Although we would have liked to have stayed longer with Dr Longwani, we had our next visit lined up with the farmer Charles Kasebausha&#8230;
